In the lower ranges of the Alps there is a rack railway operating 2000m above sea level. The steam engines working the line were built between 1897 and 1902 and are still in use today. Through steep and dangerous terrain the railway climbs 1200m. At the mid point the locomotives are fed and watered. Further on there are tunnels to be negotiated before the summit is reached. In addition to the steamers you will see a most most unusual rail car - a Salamander! at least that’s its nickname. A beautiful ride through marvellous mountainous Austria.
