TTR56 Welcome back to Norway! We are going to undertake one of the world’s great railway journies: the 500 km from Norway’s capital Oslo to its second city Bergen. The third section of our run starts at Ål, 437 metres absl. This is where the Bergensbanen really starts to climb: 437m at Ål, 794m at Geilo - the winter sports centre - to 1222m at Finse the highest station on the route. During the 1990s the NSB commissioned the Finse tunnel. The spoil from the tunnel excavation was used to create a causeway over the glaciar to the east. This has given the NSB a section of line suitable for 160kph running that is probably unique for an altitude of 1200 metres. With a bright blue sky and several metres of snow to the side of the trace it’s an exhilarating run for our El18! At Myrdal we meet the wonderful Flåmbanen-the world’s most exciting tourist railway? This is a ride that everyone will enjoy, even without a specific interest in railways.
