Welcome back to the Simplon. TTR95 continues where TTR94 concluded at Montreux. A stylish town on a very stylish railway! First stop on this lovely spring morning is Vevey, home to food giant Nestlé, then the lovely section alongside the shore of Lake Geneva, through the vineyards at Cully before we reach Lausanne, probably the most cosmopolitan city in the confederation. After the complex junction at Archy we pass Lausanne Triage (rbf) one of the three key dispersal yards on the SBB wagonload network. To the south west the line has been upgraded for higher speeds, and additional tracks have been squeezed in between the villages and the lake to keep the increasing number of freight trains on the move. The run into Geneva is spectacular - you glimpse the iconic fountain (jet d’eau) before you see the city - then the fruits of the SBB’s investment in rail infrastructure. La Gare de Cornavin Genève is a truly international station and we make a stop here for a look around. The final leg to the airport may sound dull, but it’s not as we pass many of the French speaking city’s freight facilities and share the route with the SNCF.
