Between the Lines Summer 2007. Welcome to the fourth edition of our magazine for European rail enthusiasts. In this issue our major article is: “Wassen” The famous spiral complex that is part of Europe’s most important north -south freight route- the Gotthard. From the renowned church in the small village you can follow trains for much of the spiral as they pop out of tunnels like rabbits out of a hat! Very disorientating until you get to grips with it! We also spend some time at Zürich Spreitenbach - this is where routes from Germany and north Switzerland funnel into the city adjacent to the country’s largest freight yard at Limmattal. Very busy - very diverse! Something quite different for us in our third feature- a birthday visit to a German narrow gauge line that runs alongside the Czech border. The Fichtelbergbahn may not be the best known - perhaps because of its location - but it’s full of interest and scenically splendid! Our cabride for issue 4 is with a German ICE on the last leg of a long run from Hanau to Frankfurt Hbf.
